Houston, Texas – Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to grant an emergency stay requested by the Trump-Vance administration, allowing a sweeping federal government reorganization to proceed despite lower court injunctions halting the process: “I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to allow President Trump’s unlawful dismantling of the federal government to continue while our case proceeds. This decision puts critical services that Harris County residents rely on in serious jeopardy. The Trump administration’s reckless plan would gut the federal government and leave communities like ours to pick up the pieces. From Social Security offices, to disaster response, to keeping our air and water clean, the services people depend on every day are under attack. This decision will have real consequences for Harris County families. Harris County isn't just standing by while Washington plays games with our future. The lower courts got it right when they said Trump's actions were likely unconstitutional. We will continue to fight alongside our coalition partners—including labor unions, nonprofit organizations, and local governments from across the country—to protect the constitutional guardrails that prevent any president from running amok with the federal government. Harris County residents deserve better than a federal government operating in chaos." A previous statement on this case from County Attorney Menefee may be found here. |
