Harris County Attorney Successfully Defends 10% Bail Bond Premium

Houston, TX (April 22, 2022) - Today a Harris County District Judge denied the request by a bail bond company asking to block the Harris County Bail Bond Board from enforcing a recently adopted local rule requiring bail bond companies in Harris County to collect a minimum 10% premium before serving as a surety for people charged with certain violent felonies.

The case was argued by Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee and First Assistant Jonathan Fombonne.

Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee issued the following statement:

"The Bail Bond Board adopted this rule after hearing directly from the families of victims of violent crimes, community organizers, and law enforcement. Their decision was supported by Harris County Commissioners Court and leaders of both political parties.

I’m pleased with the court’s decision today to reject the request for a temporary restraining order that would have blocked this rule from being implemented.”

The case will soon be set for a temporary injunction hearing.
