Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin Files Amicus Brief Opposing Executive Order That Would Upend Mail Voting Ahead of November Election
HARRIS COUNTY - Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin has filed an important brief with the United States Supreme Court pushing back against the latest attempt by President Trump to interfere with elections. In the amicus brief, she is asking the Supreme Court to keep in place an injunction blocking Trump’s executive order that would impose illegal and chaos-inducing requirements on mail voting mere months before the November 2026 election.
The County argues the proposed changes are unconstitutional and unworkable, threatening to disenfranchise eligible voters, and would severely disrupt the efforts of County election administration officials to ensure that all eligible voters are able to have their voice heard.
"Trump's illegal executive order is the latest attempt to interfere with our elections, attempting to disenfranchise thousands of County voters of all political creeds and affiliations who vote by mail, creating chaos and impossible hurdles. We'll continue to stand for the rule of law and for every eligible voter's right to be heard,” said Kamin.
The brief, as part of Donald Trump vs State of California, details how Trump’s threat to stop all mail ballots in states that do not comply with the order’s requirements, including new USPS notification deadlines and voter list mandates, directly conflicts with existing Texas Election Code deadlines and the National Voter Registration Act, and would require Harris County to retroactively comply with a regulatory scheme for ballots that are already in process for an election three months away.
Harris County voters have already begun requesting mail ballots for the November election.
