| Houston, Texas — Today, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. US Food and Drug Administration which effectively bans the sale of mifepristone from the market nationwide. Since the FDA approved mifepristone in 2000, it has been used as a single-dose medication for early-term abortions and has become a critical component in allowing low-income, underserved communities access to reproductive care. “It’s unfortunate that once again Texas is leading the effort to roll back access to reproductive healthcare, and this time on a scale that effects the entire country. This case advances meritless theories, and I’m sure it’s not lost on anyone that Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley’s wife is the one leading the charge,” said Harris County Attorney Christian D Menefee. “Millions of women in Texas have been without access to abortion for almost a year and a half now. This case is another example that antiabortion activists will not be satisfied until they end all access to reproductive healthcare.” In September of 2021, Senate Bill 8 effectively ended all abortions after about 8 weeks in Texas and created a system of enforcement by private citizens. In the wake of the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Texas has implemented a near-total ban on the procedure. |
