Houston, Texas – Yesterday, the United States Senate confirmed Judge Dana Douglas to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, making her the first Black woman to serve on that court. The below statement can be attributed to Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee: “Judge Douglas brings a wide breadth of experience to the Fifth Circuit, having served as a judge and worked in private practice. This is history-making, as she will be the first Black woman to sit on the Fifth Circuit, which hears cases from the millions of people living in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Black women have long been underrepresented in the federal courts, and I am pleased to see President Biden helping break these barriers and showing future generations of lawyers the possibilities ahead of them. We must continue to ensure that our judges look like the people they serve.” |
