Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee Responds to Election Day Lawsuit
Houston, Texas (May 24, 2022) – Today the Harris County Republican Party and its chair filed an emergency lawsuit in the Texas Supreme Court asking the Court to block the Harris County Election Administrator’s plan to drop off ballots and election information at the central counting station after the polls close tonight.
Below is a statement from Harris County Attorney Menefee on the lawsuit:
“Harris County Republican Party officials should be ashamed. Their leadership has known about the County’s election day plans for several days, yet they waited until 6 hours before the polls close to now ask a court to throw the plans out the window and put residents’ votes at risk. And in their lawsuit, they flat out misrepresent the county’s plans to the court, making several statements that they know are demonstrably false.
This lawsuit is nothing more than a shameful attempt to throw county employees into disarray and undermine the integrity of our elections. The Harris County Republican Party has made clear they are more interested in misleading the public and filing dishonest and frivolous lawsuits than in working in conjunction with the county to ensure a smooth election night drop off and reporting process.”
