Houston, Texas — Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee has continued his advocacy in the nationwide fight for the preservation of access to mifepristone. County Attorney Menefee, along with the Public Rights Project and more than 100 local government leaders across the country, has signed onto an amicus brief in FDA v. AFHM -- 2024 SCOTUS Merits. The case challenges the Food and Drug Administration's authorization of mifepristone, a key drug in medication abortion. During the summer, the Fifth Circuit issued a ruling, currently on hold, posing a threat to nationwide access. In December, the Supreme Court decided to review the decision, which invalidated specific authorized uses of mifepristone by the FDA. "In the face of extreme abortion restrictions nationwide, women are being compelled to wait until they are near death to access essential healthcare," said Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee. "Our united efforts seek to prevent the unjust invalidation of FDA-authorized uses of mifepristone, thereby safeguarding the right to comprehensive and accessible reproductive healthcare for every person across the nation. Together, we continue to stand committed to justice, equality, and the protection of fundamental reproductive rights." The brief filed is for the merits stage of the case. This is an important phase where issues, facts, and legal arguments are presented before the U.S. Supreme Court. Menefee previously joined an amicus brief supporting access to mifepristone in support of the Federal Drug Administration in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA in April of 2023. ### |
