HOUSTON – Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin filed suit against a local scam artist posing as a financial advisor believed to have made millions of dollars through deceptive business practices targeting over 200 vulnerable residents throughout the country.
The lawsuit against United Funding Logistics, UFL Debt Settlement, and Credit Beast, and the man behind them, Brian Wilson, claims residents facing financial hardship were lured through social media solicitations with offers for credit counseling, monitoring, and debt settlement services for initial fees ranging from $250-$450 plus additional monthly subscription fees. In many cases, no meaningful services were provided.
“We’re not going to tolerate anyone who thinks they can prey on innocent residents with scams and lies. We’re talking about families who were already in financial distress, sinking them further into the hole to the tune of hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars, ” said County Attorney Kamin.
What’s more, Wilson and the sham business claimed to provide legal services. Wilson is not a licensed attorney and did not employ any attorneys on staff.
At this time, it is believed there may be additional victims. Anyone who lost money to Brian Wilson, United Funding Logistics, LLC, UFL Debt Settlement LLC, or Credit Beast LLC is asked to contact the Harris County Attorney’s Office through this form.
The Texas Finance Code requires credit service organizations to provide customers with specific information, including a description of the services to be performed and total cost, insurance bond information, an explanation of certain rights, and inform them of their ability to dispute items on their credit reports.
All credit repair firms must register with the Texas Secretary of State, and their registrations can be verified here. Anyone engaging in business with someone purporting to provide credit repair services should read these contracts carefully to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities. County Attorney Kamin also reminds residents about the Three Day Rule, which requires the ability to cancel these contracts without any penalty or obligation within three days of the date the contract is signed.
