Caring, Community-Based Support for Survivors

To combat the rising domestic violence epidemic and bridge recent gaps in federal funding, Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin and District Attorney Sean Teare created the Protective Order Extended Team (P.O.E.T.).

P.O.E.T. places trained advocates directly into local communities so survivors can safely step forward and access the help they deserve.

The program aims to make protective orders and safety resources accessible to everyone who needs them. We break down everyday barriers, strengthen survivors' safety, and partner closely with community organizations so no one has to navigate this journey alone.

How can P.O.E.T. support?

Personalized Support: Our advocates can guide you step by step through protective order assessments, filings, and follow-ups.

Removing Barriers: Offer support that respects your language, culture, and individual needs.

Community Education: Share clear information about how protective orders work and how they can keep you and your family safe.

Stronger Networks: Partner with local agencies to ensure wrap-around care for every survivor.

Who provides support?

P.O.E.T. is made up of licensed social workers and domestic violence advocates who work side by side with community agencies. By placing advocates directly in the community, we provide seamless referrals, easy communication, and consistent, caring, and trauma-informed support.

What does P.O.E.T offer?

Direct Assistance: One-on-one help completing protective order applications.

Safety Planning: Individualized safety planning based on the situation.

Legal Guidance: Clear, steady support to help navigate the justice system.

Community Outreach: Helpful resources and information on legal protections.

Applying for a Protective Order

If you have experienced family violence, stalking, sexual assault, or human trafficking, you have the right to seek legal protection. A protective order is an official court order that legally requires an abuser to stay away from you, your loved ones, and your home.

What protections are included?

Depending on your situation, a protective order can legally require the abuser to:

Stay away from your home, job, children’s schools, family, and pets;
Stop all phone calls, texts, messages, and physical tracking;
Surrender all firearms and handgun licenses;
Stop any threats or physical harm.

Is there any cost to apply?

No. There is no cost to file, serve, or obtain official certified copies of a protective order. The court may require the abuser to pay all associated fees.

What are the steps to get one?

Initial Consultation: You will meet with a compassionate domestic violence caseworker or social worker to complete your statement.

Review & Filing: A domestic violence prosecutor reviews your case and files the paperwork in family court.

Court Hearing: You will receive a letter with a mandatory court date. You must attend in person to finalize your order.
