The Harris County Attorney's Office Opens Applications for the 5th Annual Summer Legal Academy
Houston, Texas – The Office of Harris County Attorney is now accepting applications for the 2026 Summer Legal Academy (SLA), a two-week readiness program that fuels the minds of ambitious high school students destined for the world of law. The program provides an opportunity for local students to hear directly from professionals in various fields and learn more about a potential future career path.
"Over the past 4 years, the Summer Legal Academy has been an incredible resource for dozens of students from around Harris County who are interested in the legal field,” said County Attorney Jonathan Fombonne. “This is a valuable opportunity to help inform students who may not know how to navigate preparing for law school, but are interested in the field. I’d like to encourage parents and educators to help us share this opportunity with students who may be interested."
Since 2022, the program has served over 120 students from over 20 Harris County high schools in several local school districts (including HISD, Alief ISD, Klein ISD, and more).
During the program, students will:
- Learn the process of applying to law school
- How to succeed on the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test)
- Find out what to expect as a law student
- Discover the different practice areas of law
- Hear directly from various attorneys and community leaders
Any high school student in Harris County entering grades 10 through 12 may apply. Applicants are expected to submit an online application, a recommendation letter, a writing sample, a short essay, and a personal statement. The priority deadline is March 2, and the final application deadline is March 23.
The program will be held during the week from Monday, July 13th, through Friday, July 24th and students are expected to be able to attend the entire program. More information and the application are available at cao.harriscountytx.gov/students.
