The Harris County Attorney’s Office Partners with TSU for Black History Month Program on Environmental Justice

Houston, Texas – The Office of the Harris County Attorney, in partnership with Texas Southern University and leaders in environmental justice and civil rights, invites the community and legal professionals to attend Green Justice: How Black History Shaped Environmental Law.

This discussion between distinguished panelists will highlight how Black leadership helped shape legal protections that continue to influence environmental law today. The discussion qualifies for Continuing Learning Education (CLE) credits for Texas attorneys and will be informative for the general public as well.

Hosted at Texas Southern University’s Barbara Jordan–Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, the program features welcome remarks from Harris County Attorney Jonathan Fombonne, with special guest remarks from Dr. Robert D. Bullard, founding director of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.

The program also includes a distinguished panel featuring former Congresswoman the Hon. Erica Lee Carter (TX-18) and former Congressman the Hon. Craig Anthony Washington (TX-18), along with Dr. Latrice Babin, Executive Director of the Harris County Pollution Control Services Department, and Dr. Denae King, Associate Director of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.

“Black History is deeply connected to the fight for environmental justice, and this important panel discussion will highlight that journey,” said Harris County Attorney Jonathan Fombonne. “From the fight against the landfill siting in Northwood Manor to the work still happening in neighborhoods like Kashmere Gardens and Carverdale, this program connects real cases to real communities. We'll take a look at the advocacy behind these issues, the legal implications from real cases, and why this work still matters today.”
