HARRIS COUNTY – Harris County Attorney Jonathan Fombonne issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which strikes down a Louisiana Black-majority congressional district and effectively guts Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
“Today’s ruling essentially guts a core protection of the Voting Rights Act. For decades, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act helped protect communities from racial discrimination by ensuring that people of color are meaningfully represented in our democracy. The Supreme Court’s ruling will have devastating consequences for those communities and for our democracy as a whole.”
